How to Find the Right-Sized Easy-Cruz A-Sail for Your Boat

Measure the length from your fully raised spinnaker halyard down to the tack position (where the sail attaches on the deck or bowsprit). This is your max fore-triangle chord length.

Can't measure directly? (e.g., due to wind, no tools, or sheer laziness 😉): Use this formula from your rig plan or racing certificate:

Chord length = √(Isp² + Jsp²)

  • "Isp" = Height from sheer-line (at mast) to max halyard hoist.
  • "Jsp" = Distance from forestay (or tack position) along the deck to the mast's front.

(Note: Not 100% accurate due to sheerline/mast rake differences.)

If using an Easy-Sleeve (dousing sleeve), subtract its offset length from your measurement. See the table below for deductions.

Most cruisers fly the cruising A-Sail tack slightly above the foredeck balcony (bow pulpit) for clearance. Subtract your desired tack height (vertical offset) from the total chord length.

Select an EasyCruz A-Sail with a luff chord length ≤ your final dimension. Never longer!

Max luff chord length = Fore triangle chord length – Spinnaker sleeve deduction – Tack height adjustment

  • Fore triangle chord length ≈ Your jib/genoa's wire/cable (measure halyard hoist to tack position).
  • Tack height = How high the sail's lower corner (tack) flies above deck. (For cruising sails, clear the fore-balcony!)

Standard Design Downwind Sail Measurement Guide

Important: Always attach a rope/line downhaul to the halyard alongside the measuring tape to prevent tape breakage when lowering.

Measurements Required

  • 1. Maximum Luff Length (A)
    • Hoist the measuring tape to the maximum halyard position.
    • Measure down to the tack position (on deck at forestay, anchor roller, or bowsprit).
  • 2. Tack Height (B) (Flying Position)
    • Measure vertically from the tack position to the desired sail tack height:
    • Cruising boats: ~10-15 cm above pulpit.
    • Bowsprits: Deduct offset for furling drums/pulleys.
  • 3. Dousing Sleeve Offset (C) (If Applicable)
    • Specify if using a dowsing sleeve (Easy-Sleeve) (consult our Easy-Sleeve offset table for guidance).

Code-Cruz Details

For 70-110deg sailing angles, when your furling Genoa is too heavy or too small. Easy-Cruz Gennakers are designed to be used with a tighter luff than our Spinnaker range. Works great with an Easy-Sleeve douser or can be used with a furling system. A top-down furling system will require Variant model (Code-Cruz-AT) with an anti-torque luff rope, contact us.
